Irene Isabel Blea is a sociologist and writer. A native of New Mexico, Dr. Blea received her degrees in mental health and sociology from the University of Colorado. She has authored manuscripts, articles, poetry, classroom materials, legal documents and academic papers on the topics of Affirmative Action and Discrimination, Minority issues and Community involvement, Chicano cultures, Hispanic organizations and minorities and women in politics.
Over the past 40 years Dr. Irene Blea has been an activist for Chicana and women’s issues. Her stories and poetry reflect the inner thoughts of those who’ve grown up in cultures which tried to restrict their children to previously defined roles, bringing into the open both personal and societal controversies.
Dr. Blea played a defining role in the areas of affirmative action and gender discrimination in academia and championed major changes in the area of Chicano Studies at the University of New Mexico.
Her latest publication, Dragonfly contains poetry written across more than 50 years of her life which reflect the many points of view of a Chicana woman from her teen years in the mid 20th century through to today.
